Steriltom was the first Italian company to use the bag-in-box technology, combined with the sterilization process, in the tomato industry
Steriltom was the first Italian company to use the in the tomato industry. A safe and practical storage method, perfect to be used in the Food Service and Industrial channels. Compared to the traditional can, in fact, it is more , safe, hygienic and convenient.
The bag in box consists in a bag (aseptic bag) made of strong, but foldable plastic material, which can be equipped with a valve for filling/emptying. The bag is made up of a polyacoupled plastic material: polyester metallized with aluminium and polyethylene for food products (placed in direct contact with the food contained). These materials preserve the tomato pulp from light, air and any other type of gas or external contaminant and from temperature changes.
The bag is placed inside a box made of rigid material - mostly corrugated carton - which protects the bag and allows the storage of products.
The Bag is filled with the tomato pulp through automatic filling machines that prevent the entry of air into the product and the consequent deterioration of the same

- Safety: the tomato pulp is not in direct contact with the metal. In this way, the possibility of contaminating the product with metal residues while opening is avoided.
- Disposal and storage: the bag in box is easier to store, takes less space than cans and has a lower specific weight than metal.
- Convenience on transport: the bag in box allows a greater net weight transportable on trucks and containers; this translates into a lower transport cost
- Quality: They maintain the quality of the tomato pulp unchanged, avoiding the direct contact with external agents: thermal changes, air and light.

Due to the fact that the packaging comes into direct contact with food, all materials used in the bag-in-box manufacturing are subjected to strict controls on materials and must comply with Regulation (EC) 1935/2004. Plastic substances that may be used in the manufacture of food containers must be included in the positive lists of Regulation (EU) 10/2011. The products must be tested and comply with current regulations: UNE-EN 1186-9 (simulators for filling of watery food) and UNE-EN 1186-1114 (test substitute for fatty foods).
